Canada: BAD. U.S.: GOOD. FNORD!

I found this on CNN.

Canada ‘among worst polluters’

Down further in the article, it says, "European countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Germany ranked at the top of the environmental list, while Canada, Belgium and the United States were at the bottom."

And here’s a link to the original "The Maple Leaf in the OECD: Comparing progress toward sustainability" report.

Rumsfeld Fighting Techniques (Too good to miss)

Check it out. The various Fighting Styles of Donald Rumsfeld.

Lame

Today’s big stories: results from Iraq’s referendum vote are delayed til Friday, Wilma is now a hurricane, but nothing exciting expected til Friday, and Ashton Kutcher is working on a new sitcom. Ugh!

But last night I almost killed myself… and no, not on purpose.

And when they came for me…

I’ve been following this story about the gangs in Toledo rioting, turning over cars, setting fires, throwing rocks at police and looting in protest of an otherwise peaceful American Socialist Party march through Toledo, OH.

To be fair, here is a link to the Nazi forum discussing this.

A little progress

Today I got started later than I’d planned. After spending a week in Detroit and getting up 2 hours earlier than normal, I really needed to sleep in.

But, I eventually made my way to Menard’s to get the supplies for the living room remodeling project.

I took off more trim and another sheet of panelling to give myself a little more area to work with. That’s a pain in the ass in itself, and required ripping up part of the carpet. Oh, well. The carpet is going anyway.

Ok, now I’ve started

For the past few months I’ve had an electrical problem that caused the circuit breaker for the feed to the living room to continuously trip. That meant I had no power to the living room, the porch light nor the security light outside in the front of the house. I unplugged everything, but that didn’t help. Realizing I probably have a short-circuit somewhere, I took down the ceiling fan and then took off all the faceplates hoping to find tell-tale burn-marks somewhere. After finding nothing, I was left with one last option before calling an electrician. It had to be somewhere between the house and the security light outside. So, I grabbed my flashlight and climbed under the house into the crawl space where I found the wires leading underground from the junction box to that security light were corroded and in need of repair. To verify, I disconnected those wires and tapped them off. Then I flipped the breaker and voila… I again had power to the living room. I’d found the short-circuit and plan to fix those wires later.

All this is simply background. As I haven’t had power to the living room for awhile, it became a storage area. So when you look at these before pictures, you have to excuse the mess.

But now that I have power again, I’ve decided I really need to remodel this room. I really want to use this space.

I’m not the only one…

Tonight on my way home, I listened to Aretha Franklin’s "Respect". It got to that part that I’ve always heard as, "R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Take out T.C.P." and I decided once and for all I was going to figure out what the hell that meant.

God love the Google. Turns out I’m not the only one.

And for misheard lyrics, check this out.

A Good Saturday

Today, I spent the afternoon as a volunteer for Damar, helping out during their annual "Fair Day". The organization provides residential services, treatment and assistance to children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Congrats

Just wanted to post a quick message of congratulations to my little sister, Katy. She’s a senior in high school this year, and called me yesterday to tell me she just received word that she’d been accepted into the engineering program at Purdue University! Whoohoo!

I’m glad to see her hard work has paid off, and am a very proud big brother.

Utterly disappointed

Last week I received the email from Columbia House telling me it was yet again time to decline my "Director’s Selection". However, this time my chosen DVD was <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0360486/ target="_new">"Constantine" with Keanu Reeves. So, rather than decline, I ordered it to be rushed.

Last night I finally had a chance to watch it. Ugh. How boring and predictable. It sucks and isn’t worth renting, even.

On the other hand, if you get a chance to rent/watch John Water’s "Pecker", I highly recommend it. It’s funny and insightful, and gives you a lot to talk about afterward.
